What Is Otolaryngology?
Otolaryngology is one of the oldest surgical specialties in the United States.
Otolaryngologists are frequently referred to as ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialists because of the training received specifically for diseases and disorders of the ears, nose, and throat as well as structures of the head and neck.
ENT physicians have special training for diagnosing and managing diseases of the ears and hearing, nose and sinuses, larynx and voice, pharynx and esophagus, including swallowing disorders, as well as the structures of the face and neck, including the thyroid, parathyroids and salivary glands.
People who suffer from common conditions such as ear infections, allergies, TMJ discomfort, and sleep apnea are suitable candidates for getting a check-up from an otolaryngology specialist. Those with hearing impairment, ear conditions that affect their balance, and tinnitus or ringing in the ear also need such specialists.
During your consultation with an otolaryngology specialist, they will check your medical data and ask about your symptoms. They will investigate the cause of your symptoms and conduct a physical exam. They may also perform other tests, such as a nasolaryngoscopy.
Because ear, nose, and throat conditions are often complex, the ENT specialist may also refer you to other specialists and work with them to treat your problem. There may be several consultations depending on your problem and its severity.
Your otolaryngology specialist will treat your condition depending on your reported symptoms and the results of the physical exam and tests. Otolaryngology specialists are able to treat a wide variety of conditions.
